Even if they are on to something with their eye movement measures (but doubtful), they are certainly off on a delusive journey with their abstractified categorizations and interpretations. But you have to admire the audacity of marketing this absurdity to marketers.Vircazhm Magazinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01087601235530226889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21605329.post-64922180297277383612011-02-03T12:42:58.430-08:002011-02-03T12:42:58.430-08:00I think Buyology's brand is based on a careful...I think Buyology's brand is based on a careful combination of Bravery, Utility, Love, Laughter, Solutions, Help, Impressions and Tempo.Neuroskeptichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06647064768789308157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21605329.post-58137312746121354452011-02-03T09:10:19.962-08:002011-02-03T09:10:19.962-08:00Finn Årup Nielsen - Oh, I meant the more basic fac...Finn Årup Nielsen - Oh, I meant the more basic fact that there are specific biological correlates is obvious. Associating one neurotranmitter or hormone with a personality type is the "simplistic caricature" part. BUT: "We're a combination of all four systems," Fisher says [even in the USA Today article].

In contrast, "Neurotypes" seem to have no basis at all in biology.

I'm not an expert in personality by any means, but I wrote about Cloninger's system in Bad News for the Genetics of Personality:

Cloninger's theory of personality is not without its critics. In 2008, Farmer and Goldberg challenged the psychometric validity of the TCI [Temperament and Character Inventory] in a target article and in a wonderfully titled reply to Cloninger. A trenchant quote from the latter (Farmer & Goldberg, 2008) is below:

"Overall, several core theoretical assumptions and predictions associated with the psychobiological model and TCI-R assessment are either non-falsifiable, in conflict with each other, or not supported by empirical evidence."The Neurocritichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08010555869208208621noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21605329.post-52051943525113254852011-02-03T03:06:54.341-08:002011-02-03T03:06:54.341-08:00Great post! These days, getting a faculty position is as likely as winning the lottery, so maybe I should start my own phrenology enterprise.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21605329.post-21157083535996859342011-02-03T02:18:49.829-08:002011-02-03T02:18:49.829-08:00"Although a simplistic caricature of personal..."Although a simplistic caricature of personality differences, at least the proposed biological correlates are obvious." (of Helen Fisher's).

Why would it be a "simplistic caricature" and "obvious"?

I see that Fisher's "explorer" could relate to Cloninger's "Novelty Seeking" that he also suggests to be associated with the dopamine system. Is Cloninger's system a simplistic caricature? (With a good argument I could perhaps be persuaded :-)

Fisher's "builder" seems to be related to Cloninger's Harm Avoidance, but both Big Five's Neuroticism and Conscientiousness. To me Conscientiousness is not "obviously" associated with serotonin. And I am neither sure about Neuroticism.Finn Årup Nielsenhttp://www.imm.dtu.dk/~fn/noreply@blogger.com
